Research and Publications

My research sits at the intersection of clinical psychology, health sciences, ethics and community engagement, with a particular focus on trauma, sexual violence, embodiment, spirituality and mental health in marginalised contexts. My doctoral research explored how trauma recovery can be approached in ways that are relational, culturally responsive and grounded in the lived realities of communities affected by structural and intergenerational violence. Through the development and evaluation of an Integrative Trauma-Informed Care (ITIC) model, my work examines how therapeutic spaces can support survivor agency, embodied awareness, relational trust and spiritual complexity, including forms of healing that extend beyond conventional reliance on verbal disclosure. Grounded in decolonial feminist ethics and critical community psychology, this research asks how psychological care can become more equitable, ethically responsive and meaningful across diverse contexts, while ensuring that knowledge generated within marginalised communities contributes to wider conversations in clinical practice, research, policy and global mental health.

Five threads

Research themes

The questions that run through the doctoral study, the publications and the work that follows from them.

  1. Integrative trauma-informed care (ITIC)

A survivor-centred, embodied and culturally responsive approach integrating relational safety, spirituality, therapeutic co-creation and feminist-decolonial principles to support trauma recovery in marginalised contexts.

  2. Sexual violence

Research exploring the psychological, embodied, relational and social impacts of sexual violence, with a focus on trauma recovery, survivor agency and culturally responsive care

  3. Marginalised South African communities

Research centred on communities shaped by historical and ongoing structural inequality, socioeconomic exclusion and systemic violence, highlighting local knowledge, lived realities and culturally grounded pathways to wellbeing and recovery.

  4. Long-term effect of unaddressed and undisclosed childhood sexual abuse for adult survivors

Examining the enduring psychological, relational, embodied and social impacts of childhood sexual abuse, including how unresolved trauma can shape wellbeing, identity, relationships and pathways to recovery.

  5. Feminist restorative praxis

An approach that centres survivor agency, relational healing and social justice, challenging unequal power structures while creating ethical, collaborative pathways for restoring dignity, connection and wellbeing.
